Svar til Sindra Svan um hverjar röksemdir mínar fyrir því að vera á móti álveri séu:
Það eru nokkrar mjög einfaldar ástæður fyrir því að ég er á móti álverum. Fyrst ber þar að nefna að ég er náttúruverndarsinni. Þegar álver eru reist þarf orku til að knýja þau, sem leiðir til þess að virkja þarf ár, sökkva landi og búa til uppistöðulón sem fyllast af seti og drullu í fjölmörgum tilfellum og svo þorna þau upp og þar sem áður var gróðurlendi er þá drullueyðimörk. Og við erum ekki að tala um að virkja bara bæjarlækinn, heldur stórar ár, jafnvel fleiri en eina per álver, við erum að tala um að sökkva gríðarlegu landsvæði fyrir uppistöðulón, raska lífríki og eyðileggja náttúruperlur. Auk þess þarf að ryðja til til vegna byggingu sjálfs álversins og margs kyns bygginga í tengslum við það sem veldur yfirleitt þónokkru raski á náttúrunni.
Þá er ótalin mengunin sem hlýst af álbræðslu. Sem dæmi má nefna að það þarf um 172.000 bíla (miðað við meðalstóra fólksbíla) til að losa sama magn af koldíoxíði á hverju ári og Fjarðaál, nýja álverið við Reyðafjörð áætlar að gera. Þetta eru álíka margir bílar og allir fólksbílar á Íslandi. Og þetta er bara dæmi um eitt úrgangsefni mengunar af mörgum í álbræðslu. Fyrir utan sjónmengunina, sem er bara ekki mælanleg.
Í öðru lagi hef ég áhyggjur af ruðningsáhrifum stóriðjuframkvæmda á annað atvinnulíf, s.s. hátækniiðnaðinn og háu gengi krónunnar sem orsakast af miklu leyti af stóriðjustefnu stjórnvalda. Þetta helst í hendur, því hágengi krónunnar hefur slæm áhrif á vöxt og afkomu fyrirtækja. Reynir Harðarson, einn sköpunarstjórnanda og stofnanda CCP, tölvuleikjafyrirtækisins sem ber höfuð og herðar yfir önnur fyrirtæki í hugbúnaðargerð á Íslandi, segir stóriðjustefnu stjórnvalda hafa kostað CCP umtalsverðar tekjur (talan 150 milljónir króna er nefnd). Gaman er að geta þess að verðmætasköpun hátækniiðnaðar er 4% af landsframleiðslu á meðan verðmætasköpun stóriðju er 1% af landsframleiðslu. Reynir segir einnig að ef nýsköpunarfyrirtækjum eins og CCP væri boðið upp á samskonar skattaafslætti og kjör og stóriðjunni, þá stæði ekkert í vegi fyrir því að fyrirtækið starfaði á Sauðárkróki eða Húsavík. Ég trúi því að það sé meiri framtíð í hugviti og þekkingu heldur en í mengandi stóriðju og því finnst mér allt af því grátlegt að við gætum verið að gera hlutina á allt annan og betri hátt.
Annar yfirmaður hátæknifyrirtækis, Ágúst Guðmundsson, stjórnarformaður Bakkavarar Group, er sama sinnis og telur stóriðjustefnuna úrelta. Hann segist sannfærður um að jafnvel þó að Íslendingar nái því að komast í hóp stærstu álframleiðenda heims og virkja alla hagkvæmustu virkjunarkosti landsins, yrði hagnaður þess fyrir Ísland aldrei verða meiri en sem nemur framlagi eins öflugs útrásarfyrirtækis. Þeir sem trúi því að hagkerfið þurfi nauðsynlega á álverum að halda séu að lýsa vantrausti á íslenskt atvinnulíf og getu þess til að skapa þjóðinni ný verðmæti. Þessir menn sem ég vitna í vita hvað þeir eru að syngja enda eru þeir með farsælustu fyrirtækjastjórnendum í íslensku efnahagslífi í dag. Fyrirtæki beggja eru í gríðarlegri útrás og það væri stórslys að missa starfsemi þeirra úr landi eins og bent hefur til að gæti gerst með CCP. Ég vil sjá fjölbreyttari atvinnutækifæri en felast í mengandi stóriðju, ég vil vaxandi ferðamannaþjónustu og hátækniiðnað og uppbyggingu öflugra háskóla. Við eigum að fjárfesta í menntun, hugviti og náttúruvernd og búa þannig í haginn fyrir framtíðina. Í hvernig ástandi viljum við skila landinu til barnanna okkar?
Síðast en ekki síst hef ég áhyggjur af því að þetta allt eigi ekki eftir að borga sig peningalega séð. Ekki nóg með að landinu sé fórnað, tækifæri í ferðamannaiðnaði eyðilögð, mengun aukist og nýsköpunarfyrirtæki hrakin í gröfina eða úr landi, heldur er raforkan seld til stóriðjuframkvæmda á nánast kostnaðarverði og lágar arðsemiskröfur gerðar til stóriðjunnar. Íslensk stjórnvöld hafa boðið iðnaðarrisum útum allan heim, með misgott orðspor, lágt orkuverð ef þeir koma með stóriðjufyrirtækin sín hingað. Kynningarbæklingur stjórnvalda “LOWEST ENERGY PRICES” var sendur meðal annars til fyrirtækja sem eru sökuð um að stunda mjög mengandi starfsemi og virða mannréttindi lítils. Einmitt það sem ég vil, bjóða stóriðjufyrirtækjum kostakjör til að koma og eyðileggja landi mitt. Það er auglýst af hálfu stjórnvalda í áðurnefndum kynningarbæklingi að hægt sé að virkja fyrir 30 Terawattstundir á Íslandi, en þá þyrfti líka að virkja öll stærri jökulfljót og önnur fljót. Þetta krefst gríðarlegra landfórna á Íslandi, við erum að tala um að virkja útum allt, ekkert skal látið ósnert. Er það framtíð sem okkur hugnast?
Er ekki nóg komið af álfári? Hvað með að prófa eitthvað annað sem krefst ekki jafn mikilla fórna á náttúru Íslands?
